What is Reflexology?

Reflexology Hertford foot treatmentReflexology is a deeply relaxing complementary therapy in which the feet are treated in order to balance the whole body.  It works on the principle that the body is connected from head to toe by energy pathways and that specific areas of the feet correspond to all the organs, glands and parts of the body – the feet are like mini-maps of the body’s anatomy.

The therapist applies gentle pressure with fingers and thumbs to parts of the feet known as reflex areas in order to restore balance in corresponding areas of the body and promote both physical and mental wellbeing.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

Reflexology can help with many physical ailments, however, you don’t have to be unwell in order to benefit!  In fact many people enjoy reflexology simply because it is wonderfully relaxing whilst others find that treatments help to maintain their good health. Ways in which reflexology can help include:
  • Reducing stress & tension
  • Promoting deep relaxation
  • Improving circulation & neural efficiency
  • Activating the body’s self-healing
  • Managing pain
  • Improving mood & sense of well-being
Reflexology can also be used to treat a wide range of conditions including digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances and stress-related disorders

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that is recognised by the NHS and works well alongside conventional medicine.  Therapists do not diagnose and reflexology is not a substitute for seeking professional medical advice.

What to expect during a Reflexology treatment?

Sunshine Holistics Reflexology Hertford: Reflexology appointments take place in the relaxing setting of my home-based treatment room in Hertford.  On your first visit, a free consultation will be given before the treatment.  This is an entirely confidential discussion and will include some details about your medical history. The aim is to establish the reason for seeking reflexology, ensure there are no reasons why the treatment cannot go ahead and provide you with an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. You will be asked to sign a consent form.
Apart from removing your shoes and socks you will remain fully clothed and lie on your back on a treatment couch.  Cushions and blankets are used to make you feel as comfortable as possible and background music played to aid relaxation.  I begin by cleansing and then warming the feet before starting the reflexology treatment during which I apply a gentle finger and thumb technique to specific reflex points on each foot in turn.  Occasionally you may feel an area of tenderness but any sensitivity should quickly pass and clients usually feel very relaxed and some even fall asleep! I finish the treatment with a soothing foot massage.

How will I feel after a Reflexology treatment?

No two people are the same but most people report a sense of wellbeing and relaxation following a treatment.  Reflexology encourages the body to cleanse itself (a bit like a detox) and sometimes people may feel tired, have a headache or experience a release of emotions.  Usually these symptoms last 24-48hrs and are a positive sign that the body is starting the healing process.

How often do I need Reflexology?

If you are having reflexology for a particular condition then generally a course of weekly, fortnightly or monthly treatments are recommended intially but many people enjoy reflexology on an occasional basis too.  Ultimately it is your decision and we can discuss your needs at your appointment.
