What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing complementary therapy that treats the feet to support balance throughout the whole body. It is based on the principle that the body is connected by energy pathways, and that specific reflex areas on the feet correspond to organs, glands and body systems — the feet acting as miniature maps of the body.

During a Reflexology treatment, gentle finger and thumb techniques are applied to these reflex points to encourage balance, support the body’s natural healing responses and promote overall wellbeing. Many people experience a profound sense of calm and relaxation during a session.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology treatments support many aspects of health and wellbeing. You don’t need to feel unwell to benefit! Many clients choose Reflexology to help their body function at its best, relieve tension, or simply relax and restore balance.

Reflexology is known to:

Reflexology is widely used alongside conventional medicine to assist with a variety of health concerns, including digestive, hormonal, and stress-related imbalances. While Reflexology therapists do not diagnose medical conditions, treatments can provide a gentle complement to professional healthcare, helping the body restore balance and wellbeing.

What to Expect During a Reflexology Treatment?

Reflexology appointments at Sunshine Holistics in Hertford are held in a peaceful home-based treatment room, designed to allow you to unwind and switch off from the stresses of daily life.

Your appointment begins with a short, confidential consultation to discuss your reasons for booking and any relevant medical history. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions and to let me know what you would like me to focus on during the Reflexology treatment.

Throughout the session you remain fully clothed, removing only your shoes and socks, and lie comfortably on a treatment couch with cushions and blankets for support. I begin with a soothing foot massage to relax and prepare the feet before applying gentle finger and thumb techniques to specific reflex points. Each session is personalised to your needs, so the areas we focus on are guided by what will benefit you most. The Reflexology treatment itself lasts approximately 50 minutes, not including the consultation.  Many clients notice a deep sense of relaxation and wellbeing during and after their session.

For clients who enjoy a longer, more restorative experience, I also offer a 90-minute combined treatment, R&R – The Ultimate Stress Buster. This blends 40 minutes of Reflexology with 50 minutes of Reiki, creating a soothing and balanced experience that helps ease stress and promote overall wellbeing.

How Will I Feel After a Reflexology Treatment?

Everyone responds differently to Reflexology, but most people leave feeling calm, grounded and deeply relaxed. It’s common to notice a sense of balance and overall wellbeing following a session, and some clients also report relief from physical tension or discomfort.

Because Reflexology encourages the body’s natural healing responses, some people may temporarily feel a little tired, experience a mild headache, or notice an emotional release. These reactions are usually short-lived and are often a positive sign that the body is adjusting and restoring balance.

Drinking water after your treatment and allowing yourself time to rest, if possible, can help support this process. Most clients simply enjoy a lingering sense of relaxation that continues into the rest of the day.

How Often Should I Have Reflexology?

How often you have Reflexology depends on your individual needs and the reason for booking. For specific concerns, a short course of weekly or fortnightly sessions may be recommended initially to allow the body time to respond and adjust.

Many clients choose to continue with regular monthly treatments to maintain balance and wellbeing, while others book occasional sessions simply for relaxation and self-care. There is no fixed rule, Reflexology can be adapted to suit your lifestyle, preferences and goals.

We can discuss what feels right for you during your appointment to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from your sessions.
